2023 Senior Bowl: Quarterback outlook, top prospects, sleepers, how to watch, more for NFL Draft event

The Super Bowl is all that remains on the football calendar. For the majority of the NFL world, focus has turned to the 2023 NFL Draft and the milestones leading up to those three nights. One of those key events will occur this week, as many of college football’s top senior prospects are in Mobile, Alabama, for the Senior Bowl. Practices will be held Tuesday through Thursday ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

Before we take a look at the quarterbacks, top prospects and sleepers to watch, here’s how you can watch this year’s game.

How to watch

Date: Saturday, Feb. 4 | Time: 2:30 p.m. ET
Location: Hancock Whitney Stadium (Mobile, Alabama)
TV: NFL Network | Stream: fuboTV (try for free)

Top quarterback prospects

The quarterback class in Mobile lacks its usual star power. For five consecutive years, an eventual first-round pick at the position — Kenny Pickett being the latest — has taken part in the festivities. Kentucky’s Will Levis, a projected top-10 overall selection, was invited to the game but declined to focus on recovering from the season and preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine. Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker is also dealing with an injury suffered during the season.

Without those players, there is an opportunity for others to differentiate themselves. Houston’s Clayton Tune and TCU’s Max Duggan probably have the best chance to improve their stock. Fresno State’s Jake Haener is a personal favorite because of how he sees the field and his toughness. He may not be viewed as a long-term starter, but it would not be a surprise if he hung around the league for a long time.

Division II’s Shepherd University will be represented by not only quarterback Tyson Bagent, but also his offensive tackle — Joey Fisher. BYU’s Jaren Hall and Louisville’s Malik Cunningham are also in attendance.

Top non-quarterback prospects

Florida interior offensive lineman O’Cyrus Torrence is the highest-rated prospect, according to CBSSports.com’s prospect rankings. He is the highest-ranked interior offensive lineman and the No. 15 prospect overall.

BYU offensive tackle Blake Freeland (No. 30 overall), Syracuse offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron (No. 31 overall) and Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones (No. 34 overall) are all closely bunched as the next highest-rated. Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy revealed that Jones is the longest player to ever measure at the event with an 89 1/2 inch wingspan.

Notre Dame edge rusher Isaiah Foskey, Bowling Green defensive lineman Karl Brooks and Army edge rusher Andre Carter II are also ranked among the top-50 prospects.

Sleepers to watch

The term “sleeper” can take on multiple meanings. For example, it could be a small-school player who has not yet been introduced on a national stage. It could also be a player who was limited by injury or situation during his career.

Princeton wide receiver Andrei Iosivas is going to make a name for himself in the lead up to the 2023 NFL Draft. He has great size, speed and production. South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. will play one final game in his home college stadium. Luter has five interceptions over the past two seasons.

Clemson tight end Davis Allen has been on the radar for a few years, but his usage has not matched that of a top prospect. Georgia Tech defensive lineman Keion White and Oregon edge rusher DJ Johnson have tantalizing size and athletic traits, but are still a work in progress.

American vs National

The Reese’s Senior Bowl is widely regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and the first stage in the NFL Draft process. The longest continual-running all-star game has taken place in Mobile, Alabama the past 73 years.  More than 900 NFL personnel, including key decision-makers from all 32 teams, and over 900 media members from around the country were credentialed last year. The practices will be held from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2.

A four-year letterman, Richards appeared in 48 games as a Tar Heel, starting 38. He helped the Tar Heels lead the ACC in rushing yards in two of his seasons as a starter, and was a mainstay at left tackle for one of the nation’s most explosive offenses. Last season, Richards started all 14 games and played 1,049 snaps. He allowed just three sacks on the year en route to third-team All-ACC honors.

Senior Bowl 2023 rosters: Which Nebraska Cornhuskers are playing

The Senior Bowl 2023 is essentially the end of the college football career for dozens of players all over the country. It’s the last game many of them will have a chance to play with at least a few teammates (if they are lucky) and the last chance to see a few conference rivals at the same time.

The Senior Bowl is of course, a chance for guys like Nebraska football stars to show off what they can do when they are playing against the best of the best of the players who could be going onto the next level.

The Senior Bowl might not have the hype it once did. There was a time, before college players were able to enter the draft early, when this was the game to watch to see what college seniors were going to be moving onto the NFL. While the hype has been diminished a bit considering guys like CJ Stroud and Bryce Young won’t be able to play in it, even if they wanted to, it should still hold a special place for Nebraska football and college football fans in general.

This year, there is an added bonus for Nebraska Cornhuskers fans to tune in when the Senior Bowl airs on Saturday, February 4, on the NFL Network.

Senior Bowl 2023 rosters: Which Nebraska Cornhuskers are playing

It turns out that this year, there is only one Husker on the Senior Bowl roster. That player is wide receiver Trey Palmer, who announced he was going pro shortly after Matt Rhule came to town.

Palmer will play for the National Team (facing off against the American Team) and while there aren’t any other Nebraska Cornhuskers on the roster, he will get to play alongside a couple of Big Ten alums.

Defensive backs Sydney Brown and Jartavious Martin from Illinois, Riley Moss and Kaevon Merriweather from Iowa, Jakorian Bennett of Maryland and Ronnie Hickman from Ohio State will all be patrolling the secondary for the American Team.

Northwestern’s Adetomiwa Adebawore and Wisconsin’s Keeanu Benton will man the defensive front and Indiana’s Cam Jones will be the conference’s lone linebacker on the Senior Bowl roster.

The offensive line is well represented on the National Team’s roster by the B1G with Michigan’s Olusegun Oluwatimi and Ryan Hayes as well as Maryland’s Jaelyn Duncan.

As far as offensive skill players, Nebraska Cornhuskers star Trey Palmer will be joined most notably by Illinois’ Chase Brown and Michigan State’s Jayden Reed. In all the Senior Bowl National Squad has 21 players from the Big Ten.

Senior Bowl 2023 Rosters: Which Michigan Wolverines are playing?

Fans of the Michigan Wolverines are no doubt looking ahead to the 2023 Michigan football season. It’s expected to be one of the best rosters in recent memory, as long as Jim Harbaugh stops flirting with the NFL and comes back to be the head coach.

That was sort of in jest. New rumors popped up about Harbaugh over the weekend. It was reported that Harbaugh met with the Denver Broncos after his announcement that he was returning for the 2023 season, yet no deal materialized and I don’t believe it will.

Still, the saga won’t seem to end.

But Michigan football fans can enjoy watching some of their favorite players over the weekend at the 2023 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama as three Michigan Wolverines are on the roster.

Which Michigan Wolverines are playing in the Senior Bowl?

The 2023 NFL draft should have a number of Michigan football players selected, which has been the norm under Jim Harbaugh and three of those Michigan Wolverines will be in Alabama this week for the Senior Bowl.

One of those players is wide receiver Ronnie Bell, who bounced back with a solid 2022 season after missing basically the entire 2021 season due to a knee injury. Bell was outstanding in the Fiesta Bowl.

Bell posted career-highs in receptions (62) and yards (889). He also caught four touchdowns for Michigan football in 2022 and averaged 14.3 yards per reception.

Beyond that, Bell has shown the ability to return punts in his career and I fully expect him to get drafted and boost his stock this week.

Michigan football will also have two of the offensive linemen that helped the Wolverines win the Joe Moore Award down in Mobile for the 2023 Senior Bowl in left tackle Ryan Hayes and starting center Olu Oluwatimi — the 2022 Outland Award Winner.

Oluwatimi transferred to Michigan football from Virginia prior to the 2022 season and he proved to be the best center in the country. Both Oluwatimi and Hayes should be day-two draft picks at the absolute worst, but each could boost their stock this week.

Harbor is going to announce his destination on Wednesday and for about a year now, Michigan football fans have been hoping his final destination would be Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines have been one of the most consistent contenders and Harbor is essentially down to a final five that also includes Oregon, Maryland, Miami, and South

Oregon is the team that’s been gaining momentum recently and Harbor took an official visit there this past weekend.

That’s not a great sign for Michigan football fans, however, Jim Harbaugh and the coaching staff were able to meet with Harbor last week and the visit went well according to reports.

However, Steve Wiltfong of 247 sports, seemed to view Maryland as the leader entering the visit to Oregon. He reported that the Ducks have made a move but that the other programs were still in the mix too. At this point, there has been just one crystal ball projection for Harbor, which was to South Carolina.

Wiltfong hasn’t put in a prediction yet. Chad Simmons, the top recruiting expert at On3, also hasn’t put in an expert projection at this point and it seems clear why.

It’s foggy for Michigan football and others with Nyckoles Harbor

This recruitment has been really hard to read and that hasn’t changed. It seems like all of the schools in the mix have had reasons for optimism at one time or another.

Track was always going to play a big role too because Harbor has Olympic aspirations as a sprinter. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder is hoping to break 10 seconds flat in the 100-meter dash.
